Do you ask your students to write for the web? Do you post course materials on the web?
If so, you might want to check out the new Web Writing Style Guide published by a few of the editors of Writing Spaces. This style guide was the result of a Computers & Writing “collaborative sprint” earlier this year.
Here’s the description of the guide on the site:
While written for undergraduate writing students, Web Writing Style Guide could be useful to anyone wanting to learn how to write for the web. Topics in this lengthy guide include-but are not limited to-
- strategies for effective blogging, tweeting, and wiki writing
- an overview of visual design and photo manipulation
- how to write effective links, page titles, and headings
- basic copyright and fair use principles important for the web
- an introduction to HTML and CSS
- lots of links within the text to additional resources
For that matter, you might want to check out the other resources available on Writing Spaces. Here’s the general blurb from the web site:
Writing Spaces is an open textbook project for college-level writing studies courses. Each volume in the Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing series contains peer-reviewed collections of essays about writing—all composed by teachers for students—with each book available for download for free under a Creative Commons license.
