How to upload a file to Google Docs

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

You can upload a wide variety of file types to Google Docs, including both file types that Google Docs can convert and edit (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) as well as other file types, such as PDF, jpg, png, wmv, wma, mov, m4v, and mp3. If you upload a file in Word format, select the option to allow Google Docs to convert the file so that you can receive comments on it from within Google Docs.

(1) To upload a file, click on the Upload button near the upper right corner of the Google Docs screen. The Upload button is next to the Create button and has an icon on it rather than a word.

(2) Select the file from your computer and click Open. A dialogue box will open that allows you to choose whether the file should be converted to Google Docs format, as shown below. Check the convert box and click Start upload.

NOTE: Uncheck the “convert” box if you want users to download the file in its original format rather than view and comment on it within Google Docs.

(3) After the file uploads, you’ll see a dialogue box in the lower right corner that confirms the upload, which you can close by clicking on the x in the upper right corner of the box.

You can now find the file in your Home directory (or in the Owned by Me directory). The file will be private to you only unless you put it in a class collection or share it with an individual.
