HOW TO - Move a File to a Different Folder on Google Drive

To move a file, you need to find the file in the DIRECTORY VIEW. Do NOT try to move the file from within the open version of the file, as there’s no option for that. The Share button serves a different purpose, so don’t even click on it.

To move any file in Google Drive from one location to another, follow the steps below.

View Files in Directory

To open your file directory, return to drive.google.com or click on the icon in the upper left corner of an open Google Docs document. In a word processing doc, the icon is blue, and this is what it looks like when you click on it:

Use Move Buttons

Once you’re viewing the directory of your files in Google Drive, follow the steps shown in and described below each screenshot.

(1) Check the box next to the file you want to move

(2) Click on the “Move” button in the Google Drive interface and this menu of options will appear:

(1) If the target folder is inside another folder, click on the tiny drop-down arrow to reveal the sub-folders.

(2) Check the box next to the sub-folder you want to move the file to

(3) Click the Move button.

To double check that your move was successful, open the target sub-folder. If you can see your file in there, we can see it too.
