How to embed or attach a presentation to a blog post

If your blog is on WordPress.com, see this list of “Shortcode” embed codes you can use to embed content from other sites, such as presentations you’ve uploaded to a presentation sharing site like Slideshare.net

If your blog is on one of Amy’s sites, you may also be able to use the Shortcode embed codes mentioned above to embed presentations. Below are steps for embedding Powerpoint and other types of presentations.

Embedding a Presentation From Slideshare

(1) Create an account (or use an existing account) on a free presentation hosting site. You can find many such sites on the web, but the one I recommend and will describe below is SlideShare.net

(2) Upload your presentation to the site.

(3) The file may take a while to upload and convert. While it’s doing that, you can give the presentation an appropriate name (such as the title of your project), type a description, select the appropriate category, and so on.

(4) After the file has been uploaded and converted, view it. You’ll see a list of sharing options on the left. Click the one titled WordPress.

(5) A white box will appear with two embed codes in it, one labelled for use by self-hosted blogs and the other for use by WordPress.com blogs. Even though our blog counts as self-hosted, copy the code for the WordPress.com blogs, as that will activate a plugin I’ve installed on our site.

(6) Switch over to the blog post you created in order to post your presentation. Change the editing window to HTML view if it isn’t already in that view. Put your cursor where you want your presentation to be embedded. Paste the code, which will look sort of like this:

(7) To preview the post to see how the embedding worked, click the Preview Changes button in the upper right corner of the post editing page, about an inch above the blue Publish/Update button, which will launch a preview in a new window. Or save the entry as a draft and view that version.

(8) If the presentation didn’t embed properly, repeat the steps above and make sure you haven’t messed with the embed code in any way.

If all looks good, click the blue Publish or Update button. When the post has been saved, view it to see what it will look like to the rest of us.
