STUDENT SAMPLE – Transgender Vocal Therapy

Mini-Doc by Zoel (WRTG 3020 – Fall 2012)

My Visual project is on Transgender Vocal Therapy. It discusses the way in which a Transgender individual (mostly Trans women) would go about altering their vocal folds to make their voices sound as feminine as possible. My target audience is beginning linguistics, speech language hearing, and gender studies students who are interested in the way that gender norms can be used to help someone “pass” for whatever gender they choose.

The purpose of this project is to make students think about how they perform their gender and what it takes to change that. One of the biggest questions I’ve gotten concerns gender reassignment surgery which is only one of the possible surgeries a transgender individual can choose to have. In order to reach my audience I’ve interviewed two individuals that have experience of Transgender vocal fold alteration. I also included supplementary material at the bottom of the screen to aid my interviews and fill in the gaps of information.
